King's College, Taunton

Inspired teaching & superb facilities...

King’s College, Taunton, along with its prep school, King’s Hall provides continuous coeducational day and boarding education for children aged 2 to 18 years. Located on two sites, just three miles apart, King’s Hall has approximately 320 children from 2-13 years, while King’s College has around 460, aged from 13 to 18. Both schools provide inspired teaching, superb facilities, and our nurturing of individual potential combines to create an environment in which young people achieve great things.

Transitioning from King’s Hall to King’s College is seamless. A great many pupils start at 2 and finish their education with us at 18. The two-site model enables those joining at 11 to find their feet before moving to King’s College at 13.

The schools’ strong boarding ethos is central. The fact that so many pupils and staff live on both sites creates a strong sense of community. The schools are small enough to be friendly and yet large enough to compete nationally.

A good work ethic and small class sizes help sustain progress, and specialist teaching is the norm, with great emphasis placed on developing the individual: kindness, consideration, courtesy and respect for one another. The outstanding modern facilities and stunning locations ensure that children enjoy a challenging all-round education in a progressive, secure and stimulating environment.

Pupils work hard, following a traditional curriculum, strong on rigour and the difficult academic subjects, taught by teachers chosen for their deep knowledge of the subject and their infectious enthusiasm. They instil a natural love of learning and, as a result, 98% of pupils at King’s College go on to university, many to Oxford and Cambridge and other international universities, and we have consistently high standards of academic achievement. King’s Hall has a 100% pass rate at Common Entrance.

Both schools have excellent facilities. Recent developments include a new art studio at King’s College, and an impressive science faculty at King’s Hall. Our Sports Performance and Cricket Centre is a state-of-the-art indoor sports training facility, and our small off-site equestrian centre caters for riders of all abilities, and stabling for those bringing their own horses to school with them.

The wide programme of co-curricular activities available at both schools are popular across all age groups and ensure pupils are engaged, stretched and challenged outside of the classroom. Activities include outdoor pursuits, Combined Cadet Force (CCF), DofE, Forest School, music, drama, Leiths School of Food and Wine and debating.

Our alumni includes GB Hockey Goalkeeper Maddie Hinch MBE, feminist writer Laura Bates BEM, and England International Cricketer Jos Buttler MBE.

Overall, we like to think of ourselves as exceptionally cheerful schools, but also busy and purposeful ones. Our pupils leave us very well-qualified, but more importantly they leave as well-rounded, balanced individuals.

When asked what makes King’s so special, Headmaster at King’s College, Richard Biggs explained:

“We are a school with boarding, and therefore have community at our heart. This nurturing ethos is of huge value to both boarding and day pupils. We take a holistic view of education, which values and supports the talents and interests of every child. We are unashamedly forward-looking, but hold on to traditional values of scholarship and character. We are popular, extraordinarily friendly and successful. Our doors are always open to those wishing to come and visit.”
